Cards in My Wallet Right Now (2026)

Happy New Year!  My card list is relatively the same compared to the last year with just a few updates.  I retired the Chase IHG card and downgraded to the Sapphire Preferred since the Reserve annual fee is significant and I didn't want to deal with keeping track of partner requirements.  I'm still using the United Club card for lounge access.  I can share referral codes for most cards if interested!

Cards in my Wallet:

Chase Sapphire Preferred - one of the best earning cards with 3x for dining; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase Freedom - Quarterly bonus categories give 5x points and pairs with Sapphire

Chase World of Hyatt - 4x Hyatt points per stay make this one of the best for hotel stays, 2x for restaurant/transit; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase United Club Infinite - 4x miles on United, 2x miles on other travel, 2x on dining, United Club membership

Chase Biz Plus (replaced with Business Preferred - my ref link) - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x on gas station and hotel; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase Biz Cash - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x points on gas stations and restaurants

Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless - 6x points at Marriott properties; 3x Gas/Grocery/Dining up to $6k, 1 Elite Night credit per $5k spent; 2x points on other purchases; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase British Airways - 3x Avios on BA purchases; 2x on hotels; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank Strata Premier - 10x hotel and car rental, 3x points on air travel/hotel, 3x on dining/gas/grocery, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank AA Platinum - 2x American Airlines miles on purchases plus free checked bag and priority boarding; 2x on restaurants/gas stations, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank AA Mileup - 2x American Airlines miles on flights, plus 2x miles for grocery purchases, No Annual Fee

Citibank Double Cash - 2% cash back on all purchases, though the transfer option to Citi ThankYou Points makes this card strong for all non-category spend, No Annual Fee

American Express Hilton card - 7x Hilton points on stays, 5x points dining/gas/grocery, 3x all other purchases, complimentary Silver status, No Annual Fee, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Discover It card - 5x points/cash on quarterly bonus categories, link to Amazon.com purchases, No Annual Fee

Bank of America Alaska Airlines Atmos Ascent - 3x miles on Alaska purchases, 2x points on Gas/Streaming/Rideshare, $99 companion fare

Cards in My Wallet Right Now (2025)

Happy New Year!  My card list has changed a little this past year while my spending overall has stayed even.  I retired the Hilton Surpass and AA Biz Platinum while picking up the regular AA Platinum.  I'm still using the United Club card for lounge access and extra miles for purchases.  I have referral codes for most cards if needed!

Cards in My Wallet Right Now (2024)

Happy New Year!  I'm pleased that my overall spending pattern was about even throughout the year and I was also able to gain one new card given my frequent flights - the United Club card gives lounge access and was very helpful for my longer trips last year.  As always, if anyone is interested in referrals please let me know!

Cards in my Wallet:

Chase Sapphire Reserve - one of the best earning cards with 3x points for travel and 3x for dining; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase Freedom - Quarterly bonus categories give 5x points and pairs with Sapphire

Chase World of Hyatt - 4x Hyatt points per stay make this one of the best for hotel stays, 2x for restaurant/transit; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer available) - Platinum Elite status plus free night every cardmember year

Chase United Mileage Plus Select (no longer available) - 3x miles on United purchases plus EQM, 2x gas/grocery/dining + Star Alliance purchases

Chase United Club Infinite - 4x miles on United, 2x miles on other travel, 2x on dining, United Club membership

Chase Biz Plus (replaced with Business Preferred) - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x on gas station and hotel; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase Biz Cash - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x points on gas stations and restaurants

Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless - 6x points at Marriott properties; 3x Gas/Grocery/Dining up to $6k, 1 Elite Night credit per $5k spent; 2x points on other purchases; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase British Airways - 3x Avios on BA purchases; 2x on hotels; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank Premier - 3x points on travel including gas stations and grocery; 2x on dining/entertainment, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank AA Biz Platinum - 2x American Airlines miles on purchases plus free checked bag and priority boarding; 2x on gas stations, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Citibank AA Mileup - 2x American Airlines miles on flights, plus 2x miles for grocery purchases, No Annual Fee

American Express Hilton Surpass - 12x Hilton points on stays, 6x points on dining/grocery/gas, 3x points on all other purchases; complimentary Gold status, No Foreign Transaction Fee

Discover It card - 5x points/cash on quarterly bonus categories, link to Amazon.com purchases, No Annual Fee

Bank of American Alaska Airlines card - 3x miles on Alaska purchases, $99 companion fare

I still value many of these for the no annual fee and other free night perks. There's a good chance I'll consolidate several this year as my flight frequency has been reduced.

Hilton Surpass Card Changes

I was disappointed to see that Hilton and American Express are making changes to several products including the Surpass card - I've been using this card over the last few years for multiple stays when needed and the benefits overall have been excellent.  However, the upcoming changes are not favorable in my opinion.

Business Insider has the update here.

Annual fee increase to $150 (from $95)
Priority Pass Lounge access no longer available
4x bonus points on Online Retail Purchases in the US
$50 Quarterly statement credits on Hilton purchases
Complimentary National Car Rental Emerald Club Exec status

While adding some bonus categories seems positive, it assumes multiple stays at Hilton properties.  Since my stay pattern has drastically decreased, this won't be much of an offset.

Overall I don't see these changes to warrant the increase in annual fee, and I'll likely be canceling this card in the next year.

Cards in my Wallet Right now (2023)

Happy New Year!

My card list has not had any changes in the last year.  I've tried to keep things stable given my current travel patterns and work obligations, and I suspect that will be the case for now.  I may keep an eye on a new option if my work schedule stays the same.  If anyone is interested in referrals, please let me know!

Chase Biz Plus (replaced with Business Preferred) - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x on gas station and hotel; No Foreign Transaction Fee

Chase Biz Cash - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x points on gas stations and restaurants

Cards in my Wallet Right now (2021)

Happy New Year!

2020 was particularly challenging with the pandemic, however, I was still able to do a few card swaps to increase my points balances.  I'm expecting a fairly stable card cache for 2021 given where offers are currently.

Chase Freedom - Quarterly bonus categories give 5x points and pairs with Sapphire

Chase World of Hyatt - 4x Hyatt points per stay make this one of the best for hotel stays, 2x for restaurant/transit

Chase IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer available) - Platinum Elite status plus free night every cardmember year

Chase United Mileage Plus Select (no longer available) - 3x miles on United purchases plus EQM, 2x gas/grocery/dining + Star Alliance purchases

Chase Biz Plus (replaced with Business Preferred) - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x on gas station and hotel

Many of these are no annual fee cards though I still value certain cards for the benefits compared to the yearly fee.

Are there any card must-have's on your list?

The Cards in my Wallet right now

I'm often asked about how many credit cards I have since I play the points and miles game regularly.  I often look for the best bonuses and options for regular spend along with what extra perks match my travel habits/plans - this is the best way to use the cards without getting yourself into debt trouble.  Pay off each one every month!

Having cards open actually does help your credit score provided you don't keep running balances.  30% of your credit score is utilization and 35% is your payment history.

Cards in my Wallet

Chase Sapphire Reserve - one of the best earning cards with 3x points for travel and 3x for dining

Chase Freedom - Quarterly bonus categories give 5x points and pairs with Sapphire

Chase World of Hyatt - 4x Hyatt points per stay make this one of the best for hotel stays

Chase IHG Rewards Club Select (no longer available) - Platinum Elite status plus free night every cardmember year

Chase United Mileage Plus Select (no longer available) - 3x miles on United purchases plus EQM, 2x gas/grocery/dining + Star Alliance purchases

Chase Biz Plus (no longer available) - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x on gas station and hotel

Chase Biz Cash - 5x points at office supply and phone, 2x points on gas stations and restaurants

Citibank Premier - 3x points on travel including gas stations; 2x on dining/entertainment

Citibank AA Biz Platinum - 2x AA miles on purchases plus free checked bag and priority boarding; 2x on gas stations

Citibank AA Mileup - 2x AA miles on flights plus 2x miles for grocery purchases

American Express Hilton card - 7x Hilton points on stays, 5x points restaurant/gas/grocery, 3x all other purchases

American Express Gold Delta card - 2x miles on Delta purchases, $50 statement credit

Discover It card - 5x points/cash on quarterly bonus categories, link to Amazon.com purchases

Bank of American Alaska Airlines card - 3x miles on Alaska purchases, $99 companion fare

I keep a spreadsheet for all of these cards with sign-up dates, times, cancellations, and annual fee notes.  This helps me know where I stand each year and how keeping or cancelling a card might affect my overall portfolio.  In general I'm always evaluating based on what deals may be present; there is always a new app for points!

Deal Alert: $15 off $100 at Staples.com

Thought this deal might be good to post (especially if you're looking to take advantage of other points offers by visiting a local office supply store).  You have to make sure to sign up for the offer at the American Express website for your card, but the fine print says any purchase will qualify (including physical gift cards):

Not bad!  Make sure to select non-email delivery cards when going to the website.

The Daily Getaways conundrum

I'm a big fan of the Daily Getaways promotion every time it comes around during a year.  If you saw my recent post, then you also know that I highly value Hyatt points and spending them at overseas properties.

So my conundrum this week was participating on Wednesday's giveaway day - or, at least, trying to.  I clicked and clicked for almost 20 minutes to know avail, even though I was perfectly on time at the top of the hour.  Sadly all I saw was "try again".  Is it worth attempting to get these packages?  The pricing is excellent, but when the quantities are so low (200 or less) it's basically impossible to get in no matter what you do.  I haven't seen any reports of users having success.

Was anyone able to get a package?

Daily Getaways is back!

This time of year is always busy with end of semester events and other graduation formalities.  But it's also the time of year to look forward to travel deals for the fall and a seemingly recurring event called the "Daily Getaways", sponsored by American Express and the US Travel Association.  And I'm happy to report that Daily Getaways is back!

You can reach the site to see each of the weekly deals here: https://dailygetaways.ustravel.org/Default.aspx

I've been able to get in successfully on past Hyatt deals, and was able to score points that I used during my last stay at the Park Hyatt Zurich (which happens to be my favorite property when transiting Europe and Switzerland).  The larger point offers tend to be limited in quantity so some clicking is involved.  And if you use an American Express card to pay for the deal, you get another 10% off the price!

Are you planning to get in on this years giveaways?

Daily Getaways will be back in June!

Last year, the US Travel Association had a Daily Getaways program that offered up some fantastic travel and points options - and according to the site, Daily Getaways will be back again this year!

http://www.ustravel.org/marketing/daily-getaways

This was especially lucrative for certain properties and award levels - I was able to snag one of the Hyatt awards and a Wyndham redemption as well.  Part of the draw was using your American Express card to get a % off of the purchase price, which drove down the actual per-point cost for each award.

I'm hopeful that Hyatt will again be participating, and to a lesser extent Hilton (not as valuable in my book because of the recent devaluation).

3x AA miles on everday purchases through 6/30/13!

If you happen to have one of the AA branded credit cards, you may have already received this notice:

This particular promotion includes the following: Start earning 3 AAdvantage® miles per $1 spent on things you buy every day at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and drugstores — even commuter transportation expenses. Earn up to 2,500 AAdvantage® bonus miles.

I'm disappointed that it only runs through the end of the June and has a mileage cap of 2500, but these types of things are rare with American, so it's better than nothing I guess.  I won't go out of my way to get the bonus though, with other spending requirements on the horizon.

Come on, American/Citi - you can do better!

My new card is here!

Very happy to report that my new American Express Premier Rewards Gold card has arrived!  (next day service, I might add).

Here are the spend particulars (must do $2000 in 3 months):

Earn 3x points on airfare
Earn 2x points on gasoline at U.S. stand-alone gas stations
Earn 2x points at U.S. stand-alone supermarkets
Earn 1x points on other purchases.

Very doable!  I'm looking forward to using Membership Rewards points as a way to top off my other accounts for special travel.  Not only that, I now have access to Singapore and ANA for awards!

Next churn: AE Gold

It's coming up to that time in the year where I start to evaluate all of my credit cards and whether or not I should keep them.  This typically occurs when most of my card anniversaries occur and the possibility of annual fees are levied.  Often times you can avoid the annual fee by calling up the number on the card and explaining to the agent that you're investigating your options and credit, and see what offers they might have available to help you avoid the fee.  Sometimes this works, sometimes not, but there's no harm in asking.

Before I would cancel any card, though, I'd have a strategy in place to have another card ready to take the place of the one I'd want to close (so my credit doesn't change too much).  Cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred I'll probably never close, since the points earned are so valuable.

My first card churn for 2013 though is the American Express Gold card, which also will open up the Membership Rewards arena for me:

While not as good as Ultimate Rewards through Chase, Membership Rewards has many more airline transfer options (and earns triple points when buying airfare).  Here are the card highlights:

  • Earn More: earn 25K Membership Rewards® points when you spend $2K during your first three months of Card membership; earn 15K points when you spend $30,000 within one calendar year
  • Earn Fast: Earn triple points on airfare, double points on gasoline at U.S. stand-alone gas stations, double points at U.S. stand-alone supermarkets and single points on other purchases
  • Points are earned only on eligible purchases
  • Redeem with Flexibility: use points for gift cards for dining, entertainment, and to shop over 300 of some of your favorite brands
  • Access to Protections: Baggage Insurance Plan* when you travel, and shop with confidence with Extended Warranty* and Return Protection.*Underwritten by Amex Assurance Company
  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $175
And happily, I was instantly approved!  They also will be shipping it to me expedited mail in 1-3 days, so another bonus as well.

looking for a good card?

Just wanted to take this chance to share the Discover Miles card - I've been very happy with it, and it has no annual fee!  You can easily accumulate miles and there are always double miles promotions - right now they're running double on utility and phone bills, plus an end of august double promo.

Check it out!

And...you get $50 cashback with your 1st purchase within 3 mos.

50k plus churn

My last credit card churn included two cards for AA that normally I would have avoided (since I've honestly not had much luck flying AA and typically their prices are way more than what I would normally pay).  Top it off that they are in the midst of bankruptcy, but this time I was not deterred in going for the sign up bonuses.  Figured why not take the opportunity as presented.

Very happy to report that I had my first 50k post yesterday...the other should be following soon.  Not a bad haul...will mean a round trip in business class pretty much anywhere!  Now the question is where...

Suggestions?

looking for some easy points?

Daily Getaways are back!  Sponsored by American Express and the USTA, these are fairly good deals for various point and hotel redemption options that can be had for fraction of cents on the dollar in some cases.  Check out the site here:

https://dailygetaways.ustravel.org/

The calendar button will give you an idea about what the coming promotions are - May 9th will be next on my list as it is a Hyatt-based focus day.

Oh, and don't forget - if you use your American Express to pay for the rewards, you quality for 10% off the price!
