tidbits to share

- Lamborghini unveiled the world's most expensive automobile, the "Sesto Elemento," a sports car that goes from zero to 62 mph (100 kilometers per hour) in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 200 miles per hour. Cute. Price tag: $2.7 million.

- Speaking of exotic transportation, the Supreme Court of Singapore recently upheld the driving-while-intoxicated conviction of a man operating a Segway, which is one of those bizarre, drive-while-standing-up, electric-powered, two-wheeled curiosities that has a top speed of about 20 mph, thus elevating Segway's status from over-priced toy for rich movie stars to genuine vehicle.

- A Scotsman set a new world record for bungee jumping this week, completing 105 jumps in 7.5 hours from a 708-foot-high bridge in South Africa.

- After a week of pressure from a group called Corporate Accountability International to sack Ronald McDonald, the CEO of McDonald's announced today that the company would continue to employ Ronald. The CAI contends that the big yellow clown encourages children in unhealthy eating habits. McDonald's says this is about the right to choose, and Dan Gorske of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, claimed this week he just ate his 25,000th Big Mac because "it's still my favorite food."

- The buzz in Cincinnati this week is all about the bees on the roof. Apparently some big hotels, including a Marriott and a Hilton in Cincy are installing beehives so hotel patrons can enjoy fresh, local honey. Sweet, but I assume guests on the top floors will be warned to keep their windows closed.

- Astronomers announced this week they may have identified for the first time an alien planet capable of harboring Earth-type life. Gliese 581d, as the planet is known, is about 20 light years away, and studies suggest it is full of rocks, has a thin carbon-dioxide-based atmosphere, and may harbor a few drops of water.
